What Documentation Is Required to Return to Work After an Injury?

Quick Answer

Before returning to work or changing duties after an injury, you must provide written documentation from your treating medical provider that clearly outlines your work status and any restrictions. HR must review and approve this documentation before you return to work or resume full duties.

Required Documentation

  • A Return-to-Work Authorization or medical note from your treating provider

  • Documentation must clearly state:

    • Whether you are released to work

    • Any specific work restrictions

    • The duration of those restrictions

Generic notes such as “can work” or “return to work” without details are not accepted.

Important Things to Know

  • Restrictions apply to all injuries, whether work-related or non-work-related.

  • You may not return to full duty or work outside restrictions without updated written medical documentation.

  • Verbal clearance or personal judgment is not sufficient.

What Happens Next

  • HR reviews the documentation.

  • Your supervisor will confirm whether duties can be safely assigned within restrictions.

  • You may return to work only after approval is confirmed.
