What Is an MVR Check and Who Is Required to Complete One?

Quick Answer

An MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) check is a review of an individual’s official driving history. LWG requires MVR checks for team members whose job duties include driving company or customer vehicles. Positions that require driving or operating a vehicle as part of regular job duties must maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license at all times during employment with LWG. Maintaining driving eligibility is a condition of employment for these roles.

What Is an MVR?

A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is an official record maintained by a state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

It typically includes information such as:

  • Driver’s license status and class

  • License expiration or restrictions

  • Traffic violations or citations

  • At-fault accidents

  • Suspensions or revocations

An MVR does not show personal driving opinions or informal reports. It is a factual, state-issued record used by employers and insurance carriers to evaluate driving eligibility and risk.

Why Does LWG Conduct MVR Checks?

LWG conducts MVR checks to:

  • Protect team members, customers, and the public

  • Meet insurance and safety requirements

  • Ensure drivers are legally licensed and safe to operate vehicles

  • Reduce risk related to accidents, liability, and property damage

MVR checks are a standard requirement in automotive, service, and field-based roles.

Who Is Required to Complete an MVR Check?

MVR checks are required for team members who:

  • Drive company-owned vehicles

  • Drive customer vehicles

  • Perform road tests, vehicle transfers, or off-site driving as part of their job

Not all positions require driving. If your role does not involve driving, an MVR check may not be required.

How Often Are MVR Checks Completed?

MVR checks are typically:

  • Completed during the pre-employment screening or at hire process for applicable roles

  • Reviewed annually or as required by insurance, law, or Company policy

  • Re-reviewed when job duties change to include driving responsibilities

What Happens If There Is a Concern on My MVR?

If HR identifies a concern during an MVR review:

  • HR will evaluate the information using job-related and safety-based criteria

  • Driving eligibility decisions are made by HR and/or insurance carriers for insurance purposes, not supervisors

  • You may be contacted for additional information or next steps

Based on the review, driving privileges may be restricted or revoked, and depending on the nature of the change and job requirements, continued employment may be impacted, up to and including termination of employment. Driving eligibility determinations are made based on safety considerations, insurance requirements, job-related duties, and applicable laws.

Important Note

MVR review standards, eligibility requirements, and enforcement are governed by LWG policy, insurance requirements, and applicable state and federal law. In the event of any inconsistency, official policy documents apply.
