Quick Answer
Certain requests and situations must always be routed to HR the same day. Don't respond, sign, or promise anything. Many of these carry time-sensitive legal deadlines. When in doubt, send it to HR.

Always Route to HR:

  • Employee verifications and reference checks
  • Personnel records requests
  • Legal documentation and official notices, such as  subpoenas, summons, government agency communications, lawsuits or threats of litigation, garnishments
  • Employee-related documentation, such as performance/corrective action, identification, medical, workers' comp, accommodation or leave, separation, pay-related, investigation-related, witness statements
  • Law enforcement inquiries about an employee, and process servers
  • Outside threats made against people or property
  • Media requests, such as news coverage, statement requests, etc.

Two Rules to Remember

  • Don't respond, sign, or promise anything. Route it to HR via a ticket submission the same day. Many of these are time-sensitive and carry legal deadlines.
  • When in doubt, send it to HR. Anything that looks official, legal, or government-issued, or that you're just unsure about, goes to HR.
